One of GGR’s mini spider cranes spent the night in London King’s Cross station recently to help create a special war memorial in time for Remembrance Day.

The UNIC URW-095 mini crane was hired to install 11 marble tablets in the station concourse near Platform 4. The stone plaques are set in stainless steel frames and are engraved with the names of soldiers who died in World War I. The 240kg tablets represent the 11 wounded soldiers in John Singer Sargent’s famous “Gassed” painting.

The mini crane lifted each stone tablet in turn into its upright position. The UNIC URW-095 is just 600mm wide, so was compact enough to navigate through a narrow 2 metre gap in the station barriers to access the lifting location.

This isn’t the first time a UNIC mini crane has been used to help construct a tribute to war heroes. In Summer 2012 a UNIC URW-547 went installed a stone memorial for the Bomber Command at a remote cliff side location in Eastbourne.

GGR’s UNIC mini cranes have been a regular sight in Kings Cross station over the last few years, removing access decks, installing platform clocks and other platform work. Take a look at this time lapse video clip of mini cranes at work in the station overnight.
