It will have been hard for the spectators and athletes at the London 2012 triathlon and open water swimming events to miss the blue, black, red, yellow and green rings that hang over the Serpentine River. This is the handy work of a Unic mini spider crane which was hired to install the symbol of the Games at this prominent London location.

The 3 tonne capacity Unic URW-506 model lifted supporting posts and the famous Olympic Rings themselves, which weighed 1200kg, over the side of the bridge and into position above the water ready to be fitted by a team in the boat below. The quick set-up and efficient operation of this mini crane meant the job could be completed quickly and the bridge could be reopened to the public in no time at all.

George Square, Glasgow

Hopefully this iconic emblem will have provided some extra inspiration for the Brownlee brothers, our Team GB gold medal winners who competed in the Triathlon around The Serpentine and Hyde Park.

GGR’s lifting equipment has also been used to install Olympic Rings on a grassy hill at Olympic Park itself and in George Square, Glasgow. An MT1 and P11104 “4-in-Line” lifter with small vacuum pads were used with a city crane to fit sections into position on the first ever rings to be unveiled in Scotland.

GGR seem to be a lucky charm for Team GB as wherever we go our talented Olympians win gold! A Unic mini crane also worked on the tracks of the Velodrome where our medal-winning cyclists have dominated the competition.
