GGR Group, the UK’s leading provider of lifting solutions, played a vital role in the installation of the star figure in the Jurassic Dinosaur Trail at the Leeds Trinity Shopping Centre with their URW-706-2 Mini Spider Crane.

With more than 12 dinosaurs throughout the entire exhibition, the 5-metre-tall T-rex was certainly the star of the month-long event. Situated inside Trinity Shopping Centre, eye-level with the second-floor walkways and under the curved glass roof, the dinosaur was a sight to behold in contrast to the shopping centre. Straight out of a Jurassic Park movie, this structure was the perfect contrast between modern and prehistoric.

GGR was called in to install only 3 of 12 dinosaurs as the original providers lacked the right equipment to erect the colossal dinosaurs. When they failed to achieve the needed height with a forklift, they made the educated decision to contact GGR Group.

As the customer had previously tried to lift the T-rex using a forklift and failed, we knew from the beginning that this would be a challenge. Although a relatively simple lift, the 1.5-tonne weight of the dinosaur and the awkward location added a multitude of complications. Due to being located on a ground-floor balcony with the first-floor walkways beside the structure, it meant that the crane had to be transported carefully considering the structures above and below it.

After the initial consultation with Carmine Ruggiero, GGR created a detailed plan focused on its URW-706-2 Mini Spider Crane. Despite being one of the biggest mini cranes in their range it was still compact enough to fit through any door needed while still providing the lifting power required.

A plan was set out to drive the mini crane through the ground floor bollards and walkways on plywood to protect the floor from cracking. The journey the crane would follow was tracking through 2 streets within the city centre.

Because of the URW-706-2 Mini Spider Crane’s folding outriggers and easily retracted boom, it provided the customer with a simple way to access the building without the worry of paying for extra machinery or more manhours. The small size combined with its 6 tonnes of lifting power meant there was more than enough room for any potential variables in the lift.

The URW-706-2 Mini Spider Crane’s 3-metre lifting radius and 25.2-metre maximum height meant that the lift was performed quickly, safely, and effectively. The T-rex was positioned precisely, overlooking the lower floor of the Leeds Trinity Shopping Centre. The great handling of this mini crane allowed a seemingly difficult job to become achievable with the option of such a great lifting solution provided by GGR Group.
