blog 1The mightiest of the world’s mini cranes, the UNIC URW-1006, has been called upon to help with a very tall order, replacing 9m long fins on a 24m high wind turbine named, Grace Kelly.  All of the turbines manufactured by wind turbine specialists DC21 Group are given names; living just along the road from Grace is “Rita Hayworth” who reigns over the English countryside.

The Huddersfield based DC21 Group manufacture three models of wind turbine; Grace is one of their E-3120 models and has offset 164,933 kg worth of C02 since it was built in 2013. This particular model produces renewable energy that contributes to national renewable energy and carbon emissions reduction targets. The installation of this model of turbine can spell energy independence for large farms, schools, hospitals and commercial or industrial sites as it produces between 100,000 and 250,000kWh of electricity per year in the right level of wind – not a problem over the hills of Yorkshire!

GGR’s UNIC URW-1006 spider crane has an impressive 30.7m of lifting height; the perfect choice for lifting the turbine fins and rotor hub 24m up to their new home at the top of the tower. Each 410kg fin must be installed facing down by an expert installer working at the top of the tower. Once the fin has been fitted, the rotor hub rotates the unit ready for the next fin to be installed. Working at the top of the tower is not for the faint-hearted, a long climb up the ladder in full abseiling gear and safety harnesses is enough to put off many would-be adrenaline junkies.

The versatile URW-1006 mini crane, has a unique pick and carry function which enables it to travel with loads up to 1.5 tonnes, more than enough to move the fins and the 500kg rotor hub. Its configurable outriggers provide maximum stability when lifting on uneven surfaces thanks to their full safety interlocking system. The UNIC URW-1006 is also fitted with a state-of-the-art safe load indicator with high resolution colour LCD display, as well as radio remote control which gives operator feedback for safer lifting.

GGR are committed to doing our bit to reduce carbon emissions; many of our mini cranes are supplied with the option of mains electric or battery power sources. Take a look at our ‘Eco’ crane.
