GGR Group has taken on a number of lifting challenges to get sporting venues ready for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Here’s some examples of how our compact lifting solutions have helped construction projects finish on schedule in time for this summer’s events.

GGR hit the headlines after working on the Olympic Aquatics Centre where a Unic URW-506 mini crane and Hydraulica 1000 vacuum lifter helped install 4.5 metre glass units under the starting blocks of the competition pool. Our Technical Manager, Tony Lawrence even made an appearance on BBC Oxford News where he talked about our work at the site. Watch Tony’s starring moment here.

Unic URW-376 mini cranes were used for lifting operations on two of the London 2012 Games biggest venues – The Olympic Stadium and the Velodrome. The 2.9 tonne capacity mini crane model helped install lighting tracks for stairwells in the seating area at the stadium and lifted over 400 timber trusses to be laid under the Velodrome’s cycling track.

Away from London’s Olympic Park, Unic mini cranes were also used to help prepare the Lee Valley White Water Centre in Hertfordshire for the Games’ canoe competitions. With some help from our Glassboy floor cranes, Unic spider cranes assisted in fitting visitor handrails and building pedestrian bridges around the course. More Glassboy cranes along with a Geko glazing robot were also hired to install stainless steel plates on the Central Park Bridge back at the Olympic Stadium site.

GGR also supplied a host of lifting machinery for the construction of the Athlete’s Village which will house 17,000 competitors during the Olympic Games.  One of our HOMER glazing robots was used to fit glass at an angle in the atrium of the new Chobham Academy in the heart of Olympic Park.
