A Starworker 1200 trailer crane was hired from GGR Group to help build a special festive themed café at the Southbank Centre in London recently.

The 1.2 tonne capacity crane was used to build the 18 metre tall steel skeleton of the Christmas Tree Café which is part of the Southbank Centre Winter Festival. The café at the base of the tree will serve mulled wine and hot chocolate for visitors taking in the sights of the Christmas market.

The Starworker compact crane was lifted to an upper level outside the Royal Festival Hall by a mobile crane where it spent a day and night building the illuminated tree structure in this restricted space. Working at a 7 metre radius and to a 21 metre maximum hook height, the Starworker 1200 had the reach required to install each 100kg section of the tree on top of the 3 metre tall wooden base.

Each tree section was fixed into place by a team working from an access platform. Wooden sleepers and outrigger mats were placed underneath the Starworker crane to help protect the floor which the installation team were told could not be marked during the job.

GGR’s Starworker was able to work quickly and safely to make sure that the Christmas Tree Café was complete in time for the grand opening of the winter festival on the 11^th November.
