UNIC URW-706 Spider Crane Goes NuclearAs one of the strongest spider cranes on the market, GGR’s 6 tonne capacity UNIC URW-706 Spider Crane is proving more and more popular for taking on heavy duty lifting operations both in the UK and in Europe. A Nuclear site management contractor has recently purchased a URW-706 spider crane to assist in its site management projects.

The UNIC URW- 706 Spider Crane is one of the biggest mini cranes on the market, possessing 6 tonnes of lifting power, yet still compact enough for lifting in a confined space. This ‘maxi’ mini-crane is capable of handling loads of 6 tonnes to a radius of 3 metres and a height of 7.2 metres. An optional searcher hook and a 3.1m long fly jib deliver a maximum hook height of 22.7m.

UNIC URW-706 Spider Crane Goes Nuclear 1The management and operations contractor is responsible for safely managing numerous nuclear sites and hydroelectric plant in the UK working for the sites’ owner, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). The Project Manager, onsite said: We often have to work in very tight spaces on nuclear sites; the UNIC-706 is perfect for us because of its lifting power and compact size. Having this machine in our fleet means we can work more efficiently and keep our sites running safely.

The first job for the UNIC URW- 706 Spider Crane was at a power station.  The mighty machine was used in the decommissioning of the primary containment within the Steam Generating Heavy Water Reactor (SGHWR) where it was put to work removing floors and working in conjunction with another crane to dismantle high level pipe work, valves and mini platforms. The crane was also used on the removal of the EAST pipe line, where it came into its own working on soft ground conditions and operating under the High voltage cables utilising its boom height limiter.

The versatile UNIC URW-706 Spider Crane is able to tackle the most complex lifts in almost every sector; it can be controlled from the operators driving seat or by a fully functioning radio remote control for precise placement of loads. Digital feedback and data logging are also available as extras making this machine the perfect choice for safe lifting
