Hydraulica 1200 vacuum lifter at Beetham Tower

A number of GGR’s most popular glass vacuum lifters were hired to help tackle a big reglazing project recently, replacing glass panels on Manchester’s tallest skyscraper, Beetham Tower (the Hilton hotel).

Beetham Tower in central Manchester is one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks and at 47 storeys is the tallest building outside of London. The 168 metre tall building cost £150 million to construct and is home to the Hilton hotel as well as luxury apartments.

MRTA6 replacing glass at Hilton hotelThe dual circuit 1200kg capacity Hydraulica 1200-B, the 500kg capacity MRTA611 “Six in Line” and versatile MRTA6 lifters were used to handle 320-800kg glass units, including a replacement panel for a window damaged by a flying high heel apparently!

By using vacuum lifting power, each installation could be carried out as quickly and safely as possible, however this was a difficult project with some panels taking up to 10 hours to replace.

The Hydraulica 1200-B was used to lift oversized units onto the glass canopy at the hotel’s entrance whilst the MRTA611 lifter fitted 4 metre long slim panels with a little help from the Libro 500 overhang beam and the site’s tower crane. The MRTA6 was used in multiple configurations to position glass of various shapes and sizes on the building’s facade, ready for the abseiling installation team to finally fix the panels into place.
