IMG_0192GGR’s most popular glass vacuum lifter, the MRT4 Quattro has been hired from GGR Group to do a tricky glazing replacement job at Glasgow School of Art. The building, home to design studios and teaching space, is completely clad in glass; replacement of one unit means stripping and then refitting a full row of the cladding.

The building, completed in 2014, forms part of the campus of the Glasgow School of Art. Founded in 1847, the main building designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh is regarded as an architectural masterpiece. The Reid Building, designed by American Architect Steven Holl, with its geometric matte-glass exterior stands in contrast to the decorative sandstone facade of Mackintosh’s design. One of the main aims of Holl’s design was to allow as much light as possible into the building, hence the use of the complex glass cladding system.

The specialist cladding system was a bespoke design worked on by the architects, an expert facade company and a major construction firm who worked with the design brief for an industrial look with large and heavy glass panels to provide the desired light transmission. The finished look was achieved using Schuco Jansen Vis steel curtain wall with a bespoke plant on glazing adapter and the Matte white glass cladding system specified as a secret fixed, via undercut anchor, laminated glass with specialist water resistant interlayer and ceramic paint.

Each sheet of glass measured 2.5 metres long by 1.5 metres wide and weighed in at 200kg. The MRT4 Quattro  glass vacuum lifter with 320kg of lifting power, full 360 degree continuous rotation and 90 degree tilt was the perfect machine for the job. Extremely safe and reliable to use, the MRT4 Quattro has two, independent vacuum systems, each designed to handle the load independently, giving piece of mind for the operators installing the glass high on the side of the building.

The MRT4 Quattro glass vacuum lifter is one of the most popular and versatile available, this explains why it has been used on a whole host of different projects including: the UK’s greenest building, an iconic building in London’s West End and Liverpool’s World Museum.
